Compounders: Plug Your Vents for Better Purging Power

Most compounders using twin-screw extruders need to regularly worry about their vents.  For those unfamiliar, vents act like chimneys that allow gases to escape the extruder during the compounding process.  Evacuating these gases is an integral part of the process that ensures a quality end product.  This is common knowledge to experienced operators. That said, far fewer operators are aware of the benefits of plugging vents during the purging process.  Plugging vents basically super-charges your purge.

Some operators have trouble finding vent plugs or say that their plant doesn't have them.  Purging without vent plugs is a costly mistake. Both mechanical and chemical purging compounds rely on a closed system to achieve maximum cleaning power.  Mechanical purges work on pressure, shear and speed to get optimal performance, while chemical purges work on heat and containment.

As you can see, for you to get the most bang for your buck when it comes to cleaning twin-screw extruders with a commercial purge compounds, it is imperative to PLUG the VENT to get the most from your purge compound.
